Once their wings are fully formed and they have had some time to adjust they will begin to shakes to warm their wings if needed before preparing for flight. They also need to fuse their proboscis together which they did by curling and uncurling it repeatedly. They are unable to fly until the wings have hardened which can take a few hours. They need to start pumping a red liquid through their wings to help then expand and strengthen. When the butterflies first emerge their wings are soft and crumpled. The outer skin begins to harden as they started their transformation into chrysalis. They attach themselves to a surface by their tails using special silk and then hang head downwards. some caterpillars will climb to a safe, sheltered place on a plant like the underside of a leaf, branch or stem. Once they have finished growing they start getting ready to transform into the pupa stage. They only stop to shed their skin to grow some more. The caterpillars will then immediately begin to consume the plant leaves, eating and growing, eating and growing. The eggs will then hatch out into tiny caterpillars (otherwise known as larva). It starts when a butterfly lays its eggs on the underside of a plant or leaf. The life cycle of a butterfly is fascinating to watch. You can find out more about this below as well 20 other fun and interesting butterfly activities and ideas for children of all ages. Even medicines and materials like morphine, aspirin and cotton are derived from pollinated plants? This is why its so important to help pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, hover flies and beetles by providing shelter, food and egg laying spaces for them. Did you know that a third of the food we eat comes from plants that rely on pollination. It has tiny groves on its surface which help carry the liquid up towards the butterfly.īutterflies are important pollinators, they carry pollen from flower to flower as they feed on the nectar. The proboscis is curled up when not in use but unfurls quickly when needed. This helps them find right plant to lay their eggs on or feed from.īutterflies feed using a mouth part called a proboscis which they use to suck up nectar from flowers and drink from muddy puddles to absorb the minerals they need. Butterflies also have taste receptors on their feet that help them identify plants they are landing on, They can drum their feet to release chemicals from a plant and then use the spines the back of their legs to detect the right chemicals using chemo-receptors. Some butterflies use bright colours and patterns with spots that look like eyes on them to deter predators, whereas other butterflies try to blend into their surroundings using a camouflage like pattern. As a butterfly ages and its wings get damaged some of the scales will fall away leaving transparent patches of wing. Each scale reflects the light different to give the butterflies wing colour and pattern. On top of the chitin is a layer of tiny light reflecting scales. It’s made up of thin layers of chitin, which is the same material that makes up the exoskeletons of insects and crabs. You might be surprised to find out that a butterflies wing is actually transparent.
